Nadine Nakagawa

New Westminster City Councillor

Meet Nadine

Nadine was elected to New Westminster City Council on October 20, 2018. She serves on the Mayor's Task Force on Affordable Housing and the Mayor's Task Force on the Public Realm.

Nadine Nakagawa is an activist, organizer, community leader, creative writer, convenor, listener, and facilitator. She is an advocate for housing solutions and creates opportunities for dialogue. Nadine has previously worked in a shelter for homeless women and children and firmly believes in providing housing for the most vulnerable. She also advocates for the missing middle and creative approaches to the housing crisis. Nadine was instrumental in establishing a rent bank in New Westminster during her time working in MLA Judy Darcy's constituency office.

Nadine helped create space for dialogue on reconciliation in New Westminster and also worked with a team of volunteers to establish a community garden on the underused front law at City Hall. Along with Mary Trentadue, she is responsible for Paint New West Beautiful, a participatory public art project that can be seen on the West End firehall, the washroom at Moody Park, a wall downtown, and a fence in Uptown New Westminster. She regularly volunteers at community events and on city committees. Nadine is outspoken about diversity and inclusion.

For her work in the community, Nadine was named the 2017 Citizen of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce Platinum Awards. She was nominated for the 2017 Everyday Political Citizen award through Samara Canada.

Nadine has a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology and a Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with focus on communications and leadership. Her thesis on Canadian politicians' use of social media was nominated for the Governor General Gold Medal. She is currently enrolled in the Certificate in Dialogue program at SFU’s Centre for Dialogue. She works as a Communications Officer for a non-profit organization that serves vulnerable people and she owns her own small business called MintLeaf Communications.

Nadine lives in the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood with her golden retriever Gus and two cow-patterned cats named Moo and Bill.
